Social media

Social media are a group of websites used to communicate with friends. Social media has its advantages and disadvantages.

Social media is good for sharing photos and comments with friends and family. For example you use it to talk about your life and share your experiences if you are in a different country to your family and friends.

Social media has its dark side as well, some images and comments can make you very unhappy. The age limit for most social medias are 13 and over, but why do they do that? They do that because some people post disturbing images and comments. They do this for no reason at all. This is called cyber bullying. Social media has already taken 14 lives in New Zealand alone because of cyber bullying. Facebook is the main social media site used worldwide with 900 million users.

So after reading this do you want to put some protection on it or even delete your social media? It’s your choice but I don’t want to risk being cyber bullied. For me the disadvantages of social media outway the advantages.

Why use bamboo?

Why use bamboo instead of wood?  Tree’s takes up to 50 years to grow to full size where as bamboo only takes three years.  Bamboo can grow up to 20 meters high.

Most people would think that bamboo is weak and flimsy but if someone dropped four tons of bricks on the top of a bamboo beam it wouldn’t break.  It is very light so only a couple of people are needed to carry it.  Bamboo can be used for many different things likes houses, clothes, plates and more.

More and more people are using bamboo as a building supply because it’s easy and cheap.

Bugsy Malone

In the Bugsy Malone show I played Roxy.  I came in at the start of the show and got splurged. My favourite part of the show was when the gang was doing the bad guys dance and I got to tackle them. At the start of the play I was a bit nervous because I get stage fright but when I went on stage the nerves just went away. I enjoyed it a lot in the end and my family and I are proud of what I did. Bugsy Malone made me over come my fear of stage fright. I can't wait for the next show that we do.

My Learning in 2015, Term 2

What has made a difference to my learning this year?
I have improved in my reading and maths because I am spending more time on these subjects.

How do I learn best?
In a quiet zone with no interruptions.

What have I found challenging this year so far? How did I overcome this?
Maths was hard at first but I did my homework and it got easier.

How do I reflect on my learning? What do I do?
I look over my work and compare it to other people's. I look over the success criteria to ensure I have met it. I read over the teacher's comments and look at what is highlighted.

What are the successes I have had so far this year?
I moved up a math class in the first term. Scoring my first try in rugby.

What groups, teams, and extra activities, music groups have I been in?
Rugby and cricket.

What is the most important skill I will take through the rest of the year?
Work as hard as I can.

The Habit of Mind I need to focus on in Term 3 is ...
Persisting because I need to finish all my work on time.

Further goals I have for myself are ...
To score a few more tries as a forward in rugby. Win the Year 7 boys cross-country race.

WRITING

I dislike writing because it is boring and I don't like the topics.

My next steps are ...

  • to enjoy writing more,
  • generate ideas,
  • use a variety of planning formats,
  • use more descriptive words,
  • introduce my characters,
  • create a vivid image in the reader's mind,
  • develop the skills of reworking text,
  • elaborate more.
READING
I don't mind reading but I can never find a good book. I like reading non fiction. My favourite books to read are encyclopedias. I am reading The Deadly Sky at the moment and it is quite good.

My next steps are...
  • Infer by combining my own prior knowledge,
  • Recognize specific language features,
  • Find word meaning in context,
  • Read regularly and select a wider range of books.

My Dad

He is nimble with kind eyes and soft foot steps.  My Dad is 59 but still beats me at a lot of things like beach sprints and surfing.  Dad has a uniform of, at work he wears a black suit with a shirt, with the top button undone and no tie.  When at home he wears a mix of jeans or shorts and a T-shirts.  He wears glasses at work and home.  He's got black hair and very tanned skin from being on the beach.  He has a cheesy smile with hazel eyes and a wrinkle here and there.  Dad isn't very tall.  He 5 foot 8 so I am catching up.   He is a good character to be around.

The Cornflake Lion

Once upon a time there was a lion called Cornflake, he was different from other lions.  All the other lions liked hunting and fighting but Cornflake liked something else.  He loved dancing to the beat of the drums.  He did it so often that he got very good at it, all the other lions laughed at him.  One day Cornflake decided to perform a show for the rest of the pride, before the show it was very exciting for him  to show them his moves. After the performance, all of the other lions were jealouse of Cornflakes moves.

My Granny

My Granny

Most people are lucky enongh to have four grandparent but I have only got one. My granny or Jean is very special to me because she is kind, caring and lovely.  I am the only grandson Granny has, she also has three granddaughters.

She was born in  Scotland and grew up on a small farm called Laggan,  which is near the coast. Granny trained as a nurse and midwife in Edinburgh, during her working life she  worked in hospitals in Scotland, Australian and then New Zealand.  The reason Granny ended up living in New Zealand is because she met and married a New Zealand farmer named Donald, he was my Grandfather except I never got to meet him.

She is 77 on christmas day so she gets double presents. Granny is 5 foot 10 so she is a pretty tall. She has diabetes so she is very used needles. She has got white hair, green coloured eyes and glasses.

Granny lives in Te Awamutu she plays a lot of bridge with her friends.  She does voluntary work at the Information Centre, the Health Shuttle and Books on Wheels.

I love her for all of these reasons.

Magic of Three Writing

This technique involves the connection in which a series of three sensory hits (involving any of three senses) are provided in a way the builds tension - the third hint leading directly to a revelation.

  1. You hear a sound. You look nothing. You dismiss it.
  2. You see a fleeting shadow. Again you try to figure out what it was, but you don't notice anything unusual. Still you start to worry.
  3. You feel something brush past you. You turn. There it is.

When using the Magic of Three, authors use red flag words or phrases to grab the reader's attention, to build suspense and to let the reader know that something important will happen. For example-all of a sudden...

Here is my example...
I heard laughing outside as I lay in bed. I am Otta and I will be turning 6 in a couple of days.

Suddenly I saw a big shadow jump over my desk. I rub my eyes to see if I can catch another glimpse of it. I see nothing.

All of a sudden I feel something crawling over my legs and feet. I jump up like a spring and wiggle until it runs away. I close the bedroom door and put my head under the sheet.

Out of nowhere I hear a chewing noise. I take the sheet off from over my head and I see it. A big black possum is eating carrots on my open window sill. I get out of bed and chase the possum away. Relieved I go back to bed and fall into a deep sleep
